What is Mudra?

Like Asana, Pranayama, Kriya, etc. Mudra is a part of Yoga. Hatha Yoga Pradeepika states

Which means Mudra is that (posture) which gives us Joy. Mudras have a more immediate and robust impact on the body, mind, energy, emotions, etc. Mudras can be performed individually or in combination with Asana or Pranayama etc.

Hasta Mudra

Hasta Mudra is a part of various Yoga Mudra, wherein Hasta means hand. Hasta Mudra are various gestures made by hand (fingers).

How Hasta Mudra works:-

According to Yoga & Ayurveda human body is composed of the Panchamahabhoota (The Five Basic Elements), which are Prithvi (Earth), Agni (Fire), Jal (Water), Vayu (Air) & Akash (Space). Any imbalance of one or more of these elements causes disease.

Five fingers of both your hands represent these five elements (As shown in the photo). By keeping the fingers and thumb in various positions, one can balance, increase, or decrease one or more of these five elements to restore the state of balance in them, thereby curing the disease.

Mudra for Increasing Immunity

Prana Mudra

Prana is a vital energy. This mudra helps to improve the prana in your body. This is one of the critical mudra in Hasta mudra.

How to do

Touch the tip of the little finger and ring finger to the tip of the thumb. You can practice this mudra for 5-15 min.

Benefits

  • It helps to improve your immunity.
  • It helps to reduce deficiencies of Vitamins.
  • It helps to reduce forgetfulness.

Some Other Mudras and their Benefits

ApanaVayu Mudra

This mudra is also known as Sanjeevani Mudra or Heart Mudra as it can save a person from a Heart attack, and it helps to reduce various heart issues.

How to do

Touch the tip of the index finger to the base of the thumb. Join the tip of the middle finger and ring finger with the tip of the thumb.

Benefits

  • It helps to improve the health of the heart.
  • If done when one gets a heart attack, the mudra will help to minimize the damage.
  • It can regularize the heartbeats.
  • It helps to remove blockages in the veins.

Jnana mudra -

Jnana Mudra or Gyaan Mudra is a very powerful mudra. Since it has a very positive impact on the nervous system, endocrine system, and mind, we have seen many rishis; yogis, etc. use this mudra during meditation.

How to do -

Touch the tip of the index finger to the tip of the thumb.

Benefits

  • It improves the health of the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is the king gland that controls the other glands in the endocrine system. By improving the health and functioning of the pituitary gland, the mudra also helps to improve the health of other glands.
  • It improves concentration level and memory.
  • It helps to reduce irritation and anxiety.
  • It is good for the nervous system.

General guidelines while doing hasta mudra.

  • Do the mudra with both the hands.
  • You have to place the tip of the fingers on the thumb. You need not apply any pressure.
  • Don’t keep the palm/hand and other fingers stiff.
  • Though you can do these mudras while watching TV or listening to music or walking, the effect of these mudras are more if you do it, sitting erect (on the chair or on the ground) and focusing on the breath. Place the palms on your thighs with palms facing upwards.
